Game Chef 2010: Unofficial Reviews

So while the esteemed Monsieur Walton has only gotten through 13 of this year's Game Chef entries so far, one Jonathan Lavallee has taken it upon himself to briefly review all 59 of 'em (including his own Over the Wall). Not only that, he's already done it, and it's an interesting read.

I was pleased to discover that Action City! made it into his folder of games he and his group may play one of these days (which, admittedly, contains about two-thirds of all the submissions). Does this bode well for my chances in Game Chef itself? Well, it doesn't bode poorly, I guess, but other than that one pretty obviously has no bearing on the other. To be honest, it was just gratifying to read someone else's thoughts on Action City!, contest or no. Thanks, Jon(athan)!

    No worries. I know half if them made it in, I am thinking of going over them and splitting into what I want to play and what have great ideas.

    In that case, please do us both a favor and make your decision based on the revised game instead of the original you downloaded. It's a definite improvement. I finished the original at, like, 4:00 am on the day of the contest deadline.

    Speaking of contest deadlines, where's that other Jonathan, I wonder? Y'know, the one who's supposed to actually be judging this contest?

    Will do. I figure that it's just going to make things better and I really liked the game. Again, any game that *requires* an explosion at the end of every act has to be awesome.

I don't typically use houserules -- due in no small part to playing and running so many Adventurers League games -- but there's one pretty common houserule that's always bugged me. Dungeon23 X Dwarf Fortress

  Dungeon23 ! Cool idea. One room a day, one level a month, culminating in a 12-level, 365-room megadungeon.  It's also... a lot. Fortunately for me, only a few days before I saw the posts about Dungeon23, I started playing Dwarf Fortress for the first time. Even more fortunately, I am bad at it . Let me explain why that's good. If you're not familiar with the game, it's an extremely complex world-simulator with no real endgame other than having fun. What that means is up to each individual player. You could train your dwarves to be killing machines, raiding their neighbors and conquering the world. Or maybe they're farmers instead of conquerors. (Full disclosure, I still don't really know how to do either of those.) D&D's New Weapon Mastery Is from the '80s

It may be the best single-book edition of D&D . It may also be the only single-book edition of D&D , but that's neither here nor there. The RC has a lot going for it besides the form factor, like non-weapon proficiencies, something like prestige classes or subclasses, and... weapon mastery.
